Held anually since 1974, the event includes multiple races over the marathon distance of 42.195 kilometers, including elite level road running competitions for men and women, a race for the general public, an inline skating race, a wheelchair race and a handcycle race.

The Internationales Stadionfest (ISTAF) is an annual track and field athletics meeting at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, Germany. It was first held in July 1921 at the Deutsches Stadion, which was replaced from 1937 by the Stadium of the 1936 Olympic Games. Since 2006 ISTAF has been sponsored by DKB and officially known as the DKB-ISTAF and from 2010, has been part of the IAAF World Challenge, the second tier of global one day athletics events.
The ISTAF Indoor is an indoor track and field meeting which takes place at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin, Germany. The inaugural edition took place on March 1, 2014. Since 2021 the ISS Dome in Düsseldorf will host a second event under the name ISTAF Indoor Düsseldorf.

The Sports Club Dynamo Berlin was an East German sports club that existed from 1954 to 1991. It was the largest sports club of SV Dynamo, the sports association of the security agencies. The club was disbanded during the Peaceful Revolution and succeeded by sports club SC Berlin.
