
The 2000 AAA Championships was an outdoor track and field competition organised by the Amateur Athletic Association (AAA), held from 11–13 July at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, England. It was considered the de facto national championships for the United Kingdom.

The 1999–2000 Australian Athletics Championships was the 78th edition of the national championship in outdoor track and field for Australia. It was held from 24–27 February 2000 at the Stadium Australia in Sydney. It served as a selection meeting for Australia at the 2000 Summer Olympics. The 10,000 metres events took place separately at the Melbourne Track Classic on 2 March 2000 in Melbourne.

The Central African Athletics Championships are an international athletics competition between countries in Central Africa. First held in 1976, it has been held sporadically since then, with the most recent edition being the ninth championships in 2015.

The 14th Central American and Caribbean Junior Championships were held in the Estadio Sixto Escobar in San Juan, Puerto Rico between 14–16 July 2000.

At the 2000 Commonwealth Youth Games, the athletics events were held at the Meadowbank Stadium in Edinburgh, Scotland from 11–13 August. A total of 30 events were contested, divided equally between the sexes. Among the medallists were Nicola Sanders, the 2007 World Championships runner-up in the 400 metres, and Johan Cronje.

The 7th European Cross Country Championships were held at Malmö in Sweden on 10 December 2000. Paulo Guerra took his fourth title in the men's competition and Katalin Szentgyörgyi won the women's race.

The 2000 European Cup was the 21st edition of the European Cup of athletics.

The 26th European Athletics Indoor Championships were held from Friday, 25 February to Sunday, 27 February 2000 in Ghent, Belgium. This was the first ever edition to feature combined events and the first since 1975 to hold relay races.

The 2000 German Athletics Championships were held at the Eintracht-Stadion in Braunschweig on 29–30 July 2000.

The 2000 Ibero-American Championships in Athletics was the ninth edition of the international athletics competition between Ibero-American nations which was held at the Estádio Célio de Barros in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 20 and 21 May. With a total of 308 athletes, the number of competitors was the lowest since 1990. The Spanish team was much smaller than previous delegations as most of the Spaniards chose to focus on the 2000 Sydney Olympics instead. Other national teams used the competition as a chance to gain an Olympic qualifying mark.

The 2000 World Junior Championships in Athletics were held in Santiago, Chile between 17 and 22 October 2000.

The 2000 World Mountain Running Championships was the 16th edition of the global mountain running competition, World Mountain Running Championships, organised by the World Mountain Running Association.
