Australian Rules Football has been played as an organised sport in Asia since the late 1980s with teams based in Australian expatriate communities and around universities, such as in Tokyo, Japan. Before this time, only informal matches had been played in some countries, the majority involving Australian servicemen, such as a 1941 game held in Port Dickson, British Malaya. The first international games in Asia started in the early 1990s Since the 1990s footy in the region has boomed with AFL Clubs developing in most Asian countries. Played mainly by expatriate Australians, however in some countries such as Japan, China and Indonesia there is a large portion of locals in the playing base.

Vietnam made its Paralympic Games debut at the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney, with just two competitors: Nguyen Thi Xuan Anh in the women's 800m sprint in athletics, and Truong Cong Hung in the men's up to 52 kg category in powerlifting. The country's delegation in 2004 was slightly larger, and entirely composed of women, with a female sprinter, two female powerlifters and a female swimmer. In 2012, Vietnam fielded its largest delegation to date, with eleven athletes across three sports: track and field, powerlifting and swimming.

Vietnam competed at the 2005 Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines under the IOC country code VIE. By sending a delegation of 516 athletes and competing in 33 out of 40 sports and in 352 out of a total of 439 events, it aimed for a top three placing in the medals table. The final result showed that the Vietnamese team has attained its goal by ranking first in the medal tally with 18 gold, 24 silver and 11 bronze medals. The chief of mission to the games was Nguyen Hong Minh.
