In their season opener, the Patriots faced the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night as Darryl Stingley returned to Schaffer Stadium. Patriots fans gave the paralyzed star a long sustained standing ovation. However, the emotion did not carry over as the Pats lost 16-13 in overtime. The Pats would find themselves at 8-4, as the team featured a more wide-open offense under quarterback Steve Grogan. However, a three-game losing streak ended their playoff chances, as the team settled for a disappointing 9–7 season.

The 1982 New England Patriots season was the franchise's 13th season in the National Football League and 23rd overall. They finished the National Football League's strike-shortened season with a record of five wins and four losses and finished seventh in the American Football Conference. One of the most notable games in NFL history occurred during the season, when the Patriots hosted the Miami Dolphins in a game dubbed the Snowplow Game due to several inches of snow on the field at Schaefer Stadium. New England won the game 3-0. In the first round of the playoffs, they were defeated by the same Dolphins, this time in warm-weathered Miami, by a score of 28-13.

The 1987 New England Patriots season was the franchise's 18th season in the National Football League and 28th overall. They failed to improve on their 11-5 record from 1986, in the strike-shortened season, finishing at 8-7 and missing the playoffs for the first time since 1984, and finished tied for second in the AFC East Division.
The 1988 New England Patriots season was the franchise's 19th season in the National Football League, the 29th overall and the 5th under head coach Raymond Berry. With a record of nine wins and seven losses, they finished tied for second in the AFC East Division. It would take until 1994 for the Patriots to record another winning season. The Patriots improved on its 8-7 record from 1987, winning one more game due to one game being cancelled the previous season. Despite the winning record, the Patriots did not reach the postseason. They finished tied for 2nd in the AFC East with the arch rival Colts, but were regulated to 3rd place because the Colts had a better record against common opponents than the Patriots did.
The 1991 season New England Patriots season was the team's 32nd, and 22nd in the National Football League. The team finished the season with a record of six wins and ten losses, and finished fourth in the AFC East Division. Though the Patriots scored twenty or more points just five times during the season, they were able to upset playoff teams such as the Houston Oilers, Buffalo Bills and New York Jets.

The 1995 St. Louis Rams season was the team's 58th year with the National Football League (NFL) and the first of 21 seasons in St. Louis. They started the season at Busch Memorial Stadium before their new venue, the Trans World Dome, opened mid-season. The Rams looked to start their tenure in St. Louis strong by improving on their 4–12 record from 1994. In their first game in St. Louis, the Rams beat the New Orleans Saints, 17–13, and ultimately got off to a 4–0 start and looked poised to make a statement in the NFC. However, the team struggled later in the season. In week 8, the Rams were pounded, 44–10, by the dominant 49ers at home. Following this loss, the team could not recover, as they only won two more games for the remainder of the season. Ultimately, the Rams slumped to a 7–9 record and missed the playoffs for the sixth consecutive season.

The 1997 St. Louis Rams season was the team's 60th year with the National Football League (NFL) and the third season in St. Louis. Still struggling to find answers, the Rams looked to improve on their 6–10 record from 1996 and make the playoffs for the first time since 1989, when the team was still based in Anaheim. The Rams started out the season mediocre, splitting their first four games. However, after beating the Giants at home, things began to unravel, as the Rams lost their next eight games before winning three of their last four to end the season 5–11. This was Dick Vermeil’s first season as head coach of the Rams.

The 1998 St. Louis Rams season was the team’s 61st year with the National Football League (NFL) and the fourth season in St. Louis. It was the second year for head coach Dick Vermeil. The team failed to improve on its 5–11 record from 1997, and instead finished the season 4–12 and missed the playoffs for the ninth consecutive season, during which they had compiled a league-worst 45–99 record. Despite all of this, the Rams showed many signs of life during the season when they beat playoff teams such as the New York Jets and the New England Patriots. Some skeptics claim that those 2 wins helped them build signs of strong life into next season, when they won Super Bowl XXXIV against the Tennessee Titans.
