Eight teams from each conference were seeded 1–8 based on their regular season records. Two teams qualified for the playoffs despite losing records. The season ended with Super Bowl XVII when the Washington Redskins defeated the Miami Dolphins 27-17 at the Rose Bowl.

The season concluded with Super Bowl LIV, the league's championship game, on February 2, 2020, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida between the American Football Conference (AFC) champion Kansas City Chiefs and the National Football Conference (NFC) champion San Francisco 49ers. The Chiefs defeated the 49ers 31–20 to win their second Super Bowl championship. This was the final NFL season with the 12 team playoff format. This was also the last year of the Washington Redskins name and logo, as it was changed for the Washington Football Team in the 2020 NFL season.
