
Archery has been included in the Summer Youth Olympics since their inauguration. As with archery at the Summer Olympics, only the recurve is competed. Unlike the Summer Olympic competition, a mixed team event is competed, in which competitors are paired across national boundaries to create evenly matched multinational teams, as part of the Youth Olympic Games' spirit of cooperation.

Athletics has featured as a sport at the Youth Olympic Summer Games since its first edition in 2010. The Youth Olympic Games are multi-sport event and the games are held every four years just like the Olympic Games. Athletes under the age of 18 can participate in the Games. This age group corresponds with the youth category of athletics competition.

Badminton was inducted at the Youth Olympic Games at the inaugural edition in 2010. The program included two competitions: Boys' singles and Girls' singles. The 2014 edition added a Mixed Doubles event. Players from different National Olympic Committees are allowed to participate in doubles events.

Basketball was inducted at the Youth Olympic Games at the inaugural edition in 2010 for both boys and girls. The tournaments use the FIBA 3x3 rules. The program also includes skill challenge.

Beach volleyball was introduced at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China.

Golf was inducted at the Youth Olympic Games at the second edition in 2014. This marked the return of Golf to the Olympics programme after 110 years, as it was voted an Olympic sport for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Gymnastics was inducted at the Youth Olympic Games at the inaugural edition in 2010. Since the first edition, three disciplines are contested: artistic gymnastics and trampoline gymnastics -- both for boys and girls, and rhythmic gymnastics only for girls. In 2018, acrobatic gymnastics will join the programme, as well as an international team competition gathering gymnasts from all disciplines.

Modern pentathlon was introduced at the Youth Olympic Games at the inaugural edition in 2010 for both boys, girls and mixed relay. In the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics in Singapore it consisted of four of the five modern pentathlon disciplines: fencing, swimming, running and shooting. There was no riding. In 2014 Summer Youth Olympics and 2018 Summer Youth Olympics it consisted of five modern pentathlon disciplines: fencing, swimming, running, shooting, and horse riding.

Rowing has featured as a sport at the Youth Olympic Summer Games since its first edition in 2010. The Youth Olympic Games are multi-sport event and the games are held every four years just like the Olympic Games. Summer Youth Olympics racing is held over a 1000m course as opposed to the 2000m course used at the Olympics.

Sailing has featured as a sport at the Youth Olympic Summer Games since its first edition in 2010. The Youth Olympic Games are multi-sport event and the games are held every four years just like the Olympic Games. With sailing limited to four events sailing has chosen to feature athlete under 16 in two disciplines. This allows older youth competitors in sailing to focus on the Olympic disciplines through events like the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships as the games could permit sailors up to 18 years old.

The Youth Olympic Games are a multi-sport event and the games are held every four years just like the Olympic Games. Eleven weightlifting events were contested at the 2010 and 2014 games; for the 2018 games in Buenos Aires that number raised by 12.
