
The 2nd African Youth Games took place in Gaborone, Botswana's capital city from 22 to 31 May 2014. The Games featured approximately 2000 athletes from 51 African countries competing in 21 sports. Gambia, Eritrea and Mauritania were the only African countries absent from the Games.

Botswana competed at the 1998 Commonwealth Games, sending twenty-four athletes in five sports, including their first participation in squash.

Botswana competed at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

Botswana competed at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. The African nation sent seventeen athletes in three sports. For the first time in their Commonwealth Games history, Botswana won multiple medals, capturing three, including two in boxing.

Botswana competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, from 13 to 29 August 2004.

Botswana made its Paralympic Games début at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens. The country sent a single representative to compete in athletics. She set a world record and won a gold medal in the T46 women's 400m.

Botswana was represented at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne by a xx-member strong contingent comprising 21 sportspersons and xx officials.

Botswana was due to a delegation to compete at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing.

Botswana competed in the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in Delhi, India, from 3 to 14 October 2010.

Botswana participated at the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea.

Botswana competed at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics in Beijing, China, from 22 to 30 August 2015.

Botswana has competed at ten Commonwealth Games, with the first coming in 1974. They did not participate in the 1978 Commonwealth Games, but have attended all nine since. Botswana have won twelve medals, with six of these coming in boxing. Their most successful Games were 2010 when they won four medals, including Botswana's first ever gold, won by Amantle Montsho.

Botswana has competed in eight Summer Olympics. Botswana's debut was at the 1980 Summer Olympics, in Moscow. They have yet to compete in a Winter Olympics. Botswana won its inaugural medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics with Nijel Amos getting a silver in the 800m.

Botswana made its Paralympic Games début at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, sending a single representative to compete in athletics. Morama entered only the women's 400m T46 sprint, and won gold, setting a world record time of 55.99. No further athletes from Botswana have competed at the Summer Games, and Botswana has never taken part in the Winter Paralympics - leaving the country with a 100% gold medal success rate so far.

The Botswana Football Association (BFA) is the governing body of association football in Botswana, and controls the national football team. It is an affiliate of FIFA, CAF and the COSAFA.

The Botswana national rugby union team represents Botswana in the sport of rugby union. Botswana have thus far not played in a Rugby World Cup, but have participated in qualifying tournaments. They are currently ranked 77th in the world.

Botswana Police XI Sporting Club is a football (soccer) club from Botswana based in Otse.

Botswana Squash Rackets Association is the national governing body for squash in Botswana.

The Botswana women's national under-16 basketball team is a national basketball team of Botswana, administered by the Botswana Basketball Association (BBA).

ECCO City Greens FC is a football club from Botswana based in Francistown.

Extension Gunners FC is a football club based in Lobatse, Botswana. The team plays in the Botswana Premier League. The club was founded in 1962 in the Southern town of Lobatse, where it is still based. They play at the Lobatse Sports Complex.

Football is clearly the number one sport in Botswana. By October 2007 there are about 348 men’s clubs registered while only nine women's clubs have been registered. The national team has not yet enjoyed any tangible success on the field. In January 2008 Botswana reached number 101 on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking. They have less than a handful of players based outside their country.

Gaborone United Sporting Club (GU) is a football club from Botswana based in Gaborone. It is the only professional sporting club in Botswana. Its official sponsor is the Mutual and Federal Insurance Company, and it is run and owned partly by Soccer Dynamics. Gaborone United play their home games at several venues.

Gilport Lions Football Club is a soccer club from Botswana based in Lobatse. Gilport Lions team colours are green and white. The club was previously called Botswana Meat Commission F.C.. They have won the FA Challenge Cup in 2007.

Mochudi Centre Chiefs Sporting Club are a professional football club based in Gaborone, Botswana, who play in the Botswana first division following their relegation from the Premier League in 2019. Centre Chiefs have won the Botswana Premier League, the highest level of Botswana football, four times. The team originates from Mochudi, a large village on the outskirts of Gaborone.

Nico United is an association football club team based in Selebi-Phikwe, Botswana. The team rejoined the Botswana Premier League for the 2004–05 season after spending the 2003–04 season playing in the second level, First Division-North. Majombolo, as the team is widely known, are based in the copper and nickel mining town of Selebi-Phikwe, in the northeast part of Botswana, about 420 kilometres from the capital Gaborone.

Notwane FC is a football club from Botswana based in Gaborone. It is named after the Notwane River. Notwane is owned by GMG Global Investments, a subsidiary of GMG Holdings and recently made major scoop by signing former South African international players, former Orlando Pirates player Benedict Vilakazi and former Mamelodi Sundowns player Manqoba Ngwenya

FC Satmos is a football club from Botswana based in Selebi-Phikwe. SATMOS was originally called Copper Chiefs Football Club and was formed in 1996 by Late Samuel Thotogelo Molati Sono (SATMOS). The club is popularly known as the Cheetahs. It became a professional team in 1997. Its Motto is Youth Development and Professionalism. In 1997, FC Satmos was registered in the league and duly took the place of Copper Chiefs in the then Chibuku Second Division. The team was duly promoted to the first division, It came as no surprise as Satmos won the First Division campaign and was promoted to the elite league in 1999.

Tati African Football Independent Club also known as TAFIC for short, is a football club based in Francistown, Botswana. The team was relegated from the Botswana Premier League to the First Division North in 2014. Nicknamed Matjimenyenga,after a stream, which runs behind the low-income locations of Maipaafela and Kgaphamadi. The club motto: "Undipe ndi kupe". The club was founded as in 1959 as a break away from the then popular TAFA football club. Information has it that the founders of TAFIC, which was initially known as Sharp Shooters in its formative years, were based at Kgaphamadi. They gained promotion back to the elite league as champions in the 2016/17 season but were subsequently relegated the very next season. They are currently playing in the Botswana Premier League.

TASC FC is a football club from Botswana based in Francistown. TASC was originally called Army Zebras Football Club and was formed in 1983 by Mr. Leshongwane, Mike Molefe and Motang. The club is popularly known as Tongo Boys or TASC Confidence. TASC- Tati Sporting Club.

Uniao Flamengo Santos is a football club from Gabane, Botswana based in Gaborone. They play their home matches at UB Stadium in Gaborone.
