
The 2016 CERH European Championship was the 52nd edition of the CERH European Roller Hockey Championship, a biennial tournament for men's national roller hockey teams of Europe organised by CERH, which took place between 11 and 16 July in Oliveira de Azeméis, Portugal.

The 2016 Women’s Euro Beach Soccer Cup was the inaugural edition of the international, European beach soccer championship for women's national teams. Having promoted women's friendlies and exhibition events since 2009, and hosting a men's version of the Euro Beach Soccer Cup since 1998, this was the first official competitive international tournament between Women's national squads to be organised by Beach Soccer Worldwide (BSWW).

Portugal competed at the 2016 European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam, Netherlands, between 6 and 10 July 2016. On 27 June 2016, the Portuguese Athletics Federation announced the list of 33 athletes taking part in the championships, which included 16 men and 17 women.

Portugal competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. Portuguese athletes had appeared in every edition of the Summer Olympic Games since the nation's debut in 1912.

Portugal competed at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 7 to 18 September 2016.

Portugal competed at the 2016 Winter Youth Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway from 12 to 21 February 2016.

The 2016 TCR International Series Estoril round was the second round of the 2016 TCR International Series season. It took place on 24 April at the Autódromo do Estoril.
