Association football is a national sport in Malaysia, where the first modern set of rules for the code were established in 1921, which were a major influence on the development of the modern Laws of the Game. The sport of football in the country of Malaysia is run by the Football Association of Malaysia.

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) is the national governing body of football in Malaysia responsible for organising the Malaysia national football team within the country. The Football Association of Malaysia headquarters is located at Wisma FAM.

Malaysia M3 League is the third level of the football league competition in Malaysia. It operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Malaysia Premier League and Malaysia M4 League. The league was created as part of Malaysian Football League plan to reformed Malaysian football league structure. It was a replacement of the former FAM League.

The Malaysia national football team represents Malaysia in international football and is controlled by the Football Association of Malaysia. The national team is recognised by FIFA as the successor of the defunct Malaya national football team which was founded for the 1963 Merdeka Tournament one month before the institution of Malaysia. The team is officially nicknamed Harimau Malaya in reference to the Malayan tiger.

Malaysian Football League, also simply known as MFL, was created in the course of privatisation of the Malaysian football league system. It was formerly known as Football Malaysia Limited Liability Partnership (FMLLP). The company operates and runs six entities in Malaysian football under its jurisdiction, which include Liga Super, the Liga Premier, the Piala Malaysia, the Piala Cabaran Malaysia, the Piala FA and the Piala Sumbangsih. It aims to transform and move Malaysian football forward.

The National Football Development Programme of Malaysia (PPBN); abbrev: NFDP) is a long-term plan to promote and develop the sport nationally. It is intended to have two phases: 2014-2020 and 2021-2030.

Professional Footballers Association of Malaysia is a representative organisation for professional football players in Malaysia, established in 2009. It is affiliated with the worldwide professional football players organisation, FIFPro, since 22 October 2013. It was registered with the Malaysia Sports Commissioner's Office on 4 August 2014.
