The Abyss Box is a vessel containing 16 litres of water at the very high pressure of 18 megapascals to simulate the natural underwater environment of bathyal fauna living at about 1,800 metres (5,900 ft) below the surface. It is on display at Oceanopolis aquarium in Brest, France. It was designed by French researcher Bruce Shillito from Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris.

The center's motto is Columbia's Gateway to NASA and Beyond, as it has a special relationship with the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS). It is a Gateway to NASA, because the center is co-located with GISS in Columbia University's Armstrong Hall above Tom's Restaurant in New York City. In this historic location, Columbia and NASA scientists work together closely to understand the Earth's climate and how changes can impact society both in the United States and around the world. Importantly, CCSR scientists also work with many other partners – governmental, private sector, and non-governmental organizations – to answer these challenging scientific and socioeconomic questions. Since late 2017, the director of CCSR has been Dr. Michael J. Puma.

The 2005 United Nations Climate Change Conference took place between November 28 and December 9, 2005, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The conference included the 11th Conference of the Parties (COP11) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and was the first Meeting of the Parties (MOP1) to the Kyoto Protocol since their initial meeting in Kyoto in 1997. It was one of the largest intergovernmental conferences on climate change ever. The event marked the entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol on 16 February 2005. Hosting more than 10,000 delegates, it was one of Canada's largest international events ever and the largest gathering in Montreal since Expo 67. The Montreal Action Plan was an agreement to "extend the life of the Kyoto Protocol beyond its 2012 expiration date and negotiate deeper cuts in greenhouse gas emissions" by starting negotiations, without delay on an extension of the protocol. Canada's environment minister, at the time, Stéphane Dion, said the agreement provides a "map for the future".
