WAmojjar Pass is a mountain pass in the Adrar Plateau in the centre of Adrar, near Atar, Mauritania. The pink-brown sandstone of the pass was worn away by repeated cycles of extreme dryness interrupted by torrential rain. The bases of the steep valley walls are covered in scree, loosed by the erosion of the rainfall. There is little plant life in the pass. Acacias are a notable exception, as they are resistant to drought.
WThe Arak gorges are a series of desert gorges located in Tamanrasset Province, Algeria. The gorges are roughly 330 kilometres from the city of Tamanrasset. Carved by ancient river activity, the canyon walls vary in height from 250 to 500 m, and the canyon base is now a dry wadi.
WKariba Gorge is a large, natural gorge through which flowed the Zambezi River on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, Africa. In 1959 the large double arch concrete Kariba Dam was completed, completely filling the gorge and creating the largest man-made lake in the world. Lake Kariba was filled between 1958 and 1963 following the completion of the Kariba Dam at its northeastern end, flooding the Kariba Gorge on the Zambezi River and displacing large numbers of wildlife and the local Tonga people.

WThe Olduvai Gorge or Oldupai Gorge in Tanzania is one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world; it has proven invaluable in furthering understanding of early human evolution. A steep-sided ravine in the Great Rift Valley that stretches across East Africa, it is about 48 km (30 mi) long, and is located in the eastern Serengeti Plains within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in the Arusha Region, about 45 kilometres from Laetoli, another important archaeological site of early human occupation. The British/Kenyan paleoanthropologist-archeologist team Mary and Louis Leakey established and developed the excavation and research programs at Olduvai Gorge which achieved great advances of human knowledge and world-renowned status.

The pass, completely sandy, dominates an eponymous gorge which ends in the Oued el Abiod or White Valley on the eastern side and originates the erg Amatlich on its western slopes.
