Portrait of Mariana of AustriaW
Portrait of Mariana of Austria

Portrait of Mariana of Austria is a 1652–1653 oil-on-canvas painting by Diego Velázquez, the leading artist of the Spanish Golden Age, existing in a number of versions. Its subject, Doña Mariana, was the daughter of Emperor Ferdinand III and Maria Anna of Spain. She was nineteen years old when the painting was completed. Although described as vivacious and fun-loving in life, she is given an unhappy expression in Velázquez's portrait. The portrait is painted in shades of black and red, and her face is heavily made up. Her right hand rests on the back of a chair, and she holds a lace handkerchief in her left hand. Her bodice is decorated with jewellery, including a gold necklace, bracelets and a large gold brooch. A clock rests on scarlet drapery behind her, signifying her status and discernment.

Portrait of Stephan Geraedts, Husband of Isabella Coymans is an oil on canvas painting by Antwerp-born Dutch Golden Age painter Frans Hals. The painting was originally part of a couple of pendant wedding portraits. Hals probably painted the present portrait, Stephanus Geraerdts', alderman in Haarlem, and the accompanying portrait of the latter's wife Isabella Coymans around 1650-1652, six or seven years after their marriage in 1644. Isabella's portrait is now in a private collection in Paris.

The Quack DoctorW
The Quack Doctor

The Quack Doctor is a panel painting by the Dutch artist Gerrit Dou from 1652. It depicts a crowd gathered around a quack doctor as he promotes his wares. Dou also paints himself leaning out the window with a palette in hand. By including himself in the composition, he contrasts the deceptions involved in painting with those of quack medicine. For Dou, the composition was a departure; he was known for niche pieces, which depict an interior framed by a window. The painting has been written about quite extensively and is among the best-known treatments of its subject.

Self-Portrait (Rembrandt, Vienna)W
Self-Portrait (Rembrandt, Vienna)

Self Portrait is an oil on canvas painting by the Dutch artist Rembrandt. Painted in 1652, it is one of over 40 painted self-portraits by Rembrandt, and was the first he had painted since 1645. In composition it is different from his previous self-portraits, depicting the painter in a direct frontal pose, hands on his hips, and with an air of self-confidence. It was painted the year that his financial difficulties began, and breaks with the sumptuous finery he had worn in previous self-portraits. Art historian Christopher White has called it "one of the most magisterial and sombre of these (late) pictures". It is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.

A View of DelftW
A View of Delft

A View of Delft, with a Musical Instrument Seller's Stall is a 1652 painting by Carel Fabritius. It is an oil painting on canvas of 20.9 by 35.7 cm of a cityscape of Delft. The work has been in the collection of the National Gallery in London since 1922. The unusual perspective suggests that it may have been intended to have been displayed on a curved surface at the back of a perspective box. Fabritius is documented to have worked on these. The view is of the Nieuwe Kerk facing the Town Hall and several still-extant houses at the point where the Oude Langendijk canal meets the Vrouwenrecht.
