It uses mobile devices with GPS to locate, capture, train, and battle virtual creatures, called Pokémon, which appear as if they are in the player's real-world location. The game is free-to-play; it uses a freemium business model combined with local advertising and supports in-app purchases for additional in-game items. The game launched with around 150 species of Pokémon, which had increased to around 600 by 2020.

Pokémon Sleep is an upcoming mobile game for Android and iOS, as part of the Pokémon series. It is being developed by Japanese studio "Select Button", with assistance by Pokémon Go developer Niantic, and published by The Pokémon Company. It was announced on May 28, 2019 by Tsunekazu Ishihara, CEO of the Pokémon Company, during a press conference held in Tokyo as well as on the company's official Twitter page. The game is planned to be released in 2020.
