WThe Head of the Security Service of Ukraine serves as a director of the Security Service of Ukraine. The head of the Security Service of Ukraine is ex officio a member of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. He or she is appointed or dismissed by the Supreme Council of Ukraine on proposition of the President of Ukraine.
WIvan Hennadiyovych Bakanov is a Ukrainian politician who has been the Head of the Security Service of Ukraine since 29 August 2019. Before that, he was a Deputy Head of the Security Service of Ukraine.
WVasyl Serhiyovych Hrytsak was the Head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). He became the SBU's acting head on 18 June 2015, replacing Valentyn Nalyvaichenko. The Verkhovna Rada approved his appointment on 2 July. On 22 May 2019 President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed Ivan Bakanov the first deputy chairman of the SBU. Following this Hrytsak went on vacation, and Bakanov began to perform his duties. Hrytsak never returned to his post in the SBU and Bakanov was officially appointed his successor on 29 August 2019.

He was chairman of the Intelligence Committee under the President of Ukraine.
