He became national champion and won the Kings Cup at the National Matches at Lesja in 1995. Before the 2004 Olympics in Athens he was coach for the Norwegian national team, and he has been shooting coach for the Norwegian national biathlon team several times, most recently from 2004 to 2006.

John Harry Larsen was a Norwegian rifle shooter who competed in the 100 metre running deer event at the 1952 and 1956 Olympics. He won a gold medal in 1952 and placed eighth in 1956. At the 1952 Olympics he used a custom M95M Trombone Conversion in 6.5×55mm of which there were only 3 made. Larsen won seven gold medals at the ISSF World Shooting Championships in 1949–1954. His son, John H. Larsen, Jr., also became an Olympic rifle shooter.

With his five gold medals and one silver medal, he is the Norwegian athlete with the most medals at the Summer Olympics. He participated in shooting at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp and won the gold medal in 100 m running deer, double shots and team 100 m running deer, single shots and team 100 m running deer, double shots. At the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris he defended the Olympic titles in 100 m running deer, double shots and team 100 m running deer, single shots and the silver medal in team 100 m running deer, double shots.

He won the gold medal with the Norwegian 300 metre free rifle team at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, also winning silver medals with the team at the 1912 and 1920 Summer Olympics. He also competed at the 1906 Intercalated Games winning a silver medal.
