Founded by Malaysian tycoon Robert Kuok in 1971, the company has over 100 luxury hotels and resorts with over 40,000 rooms in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, North America and Australia. The company's head office is in Kerry Centre (嘉里中心), Quarry Bay.

Standing 309.6 metres high, the Shard is the tallest building in the United Kingdom, and the seventh-tallest building in Europe. It is also the second-tallest free-standing structure in the United Kingdom, after the concrete tower of the Emley Moor transmitting station. It replaced Southwark Towers, a 24-storey office block built on the site in 1975.

The architectural height of the building is 140 m (460 ft) with its antenna reaching 153 m (502 ft), and it comprises 38 floors above ground, as well as six basement levels, with a floor area of around 70,000 m2 (750,000 sq ft).
