The speaker of a deliberative assembly, especially a legislative body, is its presiding officer, or the chair. The title was first used in 1377 in England.

Speaker of the Senate is a title given to the presiding officer of the Senate in a small number of jurisdictions and mainly amongst English-speaking countries.

The President of the European Parliament presides over the debates and activities of the European Parliament. They also represent the Parliament within the EU and internationally. The president's signature is required for enacting most EU laws and the EU budget.

The Speaker of the Parliament of Albania is the head of the Parliament whose term coincides with the term of the Parliament and they are elected by a vote during the opening session. If the President is temporarily absent or incapable of exercising his or her powers, the speaker takes over the functions of the office, as specified by the Constitution. Since the first multi-party elections held after the collapse of the Communist rule, there have been eight speakers of the Parliament. As of 10 September 2021, the Speaker of the Parliament is Lindita Nikolla.

The vice president of Bolivia, officially known as the vice president of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, is the second highest political position in Bolivia. The vice president replaces the president in his definitive absence or others impediment and is the President of the Legislative Assembly.

The President of the Brazilian Senate sometimes referred to as the President of the Senate, is elected from among their number by the members of the Brazilian Federal Senate.

The Chairman of the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria presides over the Bulgarian Parliament. The chairman's term coincides with the term of the assembly, and he or she is chosen by a vote during the opening session. The salary of the chairman is 5 900 leva per month.

The Speaker of the Senate of Canada is the presiding officer of the Senate of Canada. The Speaker represents the Senate at official functions, rules on questions of parliamentary procedure and parliamentary privilege, and presides over debates and voting in the senate. The current Speaker is George Furey who assumed office upon nomination by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on December 3, 2015, succeeding Leo Housakos.

The Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, officially styled the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China, is the presiding officer of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China, which is considered China's top legislative body. The current Chairman is Li Zhanshu.

The Speaker was the presiding officer of the Fijian House of Representatives. At its first session following a general election, the House members elected a Speaker and a Deputy Speaker. With a view to ensuring impartiality, the Speaker was not allowed to be a member of the House, though he was required to qualify for membership. The Deputy Speaker, however, was elected from among members of the House.

The President was the presiding officer of the Fijian Senate.

The House of Assembly of Kiribati has a Speaker, a function adapted from the British Westminster model. The position was established in 1979 by article 71 of the Constitution, when the country became independent from the United Kingdom. It replaced the Speaker of the former House of Representatives existing since 1967, then known as Legislative Council in 1970 and House of Assembly since 1974.

The Chairman of the Assembly of Kosovo is the head of Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo, who is elected by the parliament during the opening session. The current Chairman of the Assembly of Kosovo is Glauk Konjufca. The position also ranks first in the presidential line of succession.

The vice president of the Republic of Liberia is the second-highest executive official in Liberia, and one of only two elected executive offices along with the president. The vice president is elected on the same ticket with the president to a six-year term. In the event of the death, resignation or removal of the president, the vice president ascends to the presidency, which he or she holds for the remainder of their predecessor's term. The vice president also serves as the president of the Senate and may cast a vote in the event of a tie. The current vice president is Jewel Taylor, serving under president George Weah. She began her term on January 22, 2018.

The President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Dominican Republic is the speaker of the lower chamber of the legislature.

The National Assembly of Mali is the unicameral country's legislative body of 147 voting members.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malta is the presiding officer of the House of Representatives of Malta. The Speaker is responsible for controlling the flow of House business and acts as "referee" during debates. It is the Speaker's duty to ensure that the rules of the House for conducting its business are followed and that all Members of the House have an opportunity to take part in debates. Balancing the right of the majority to conduct business with the right of the minority to be heard is one of the Speaker's most difficult tasks. Because it is essential that the Speaker be seen to be above party politics, he/she does not take part in debate or vote, unless there is a tie. When there is a tie, the casting vote is conventionally used in a way to promote further discussion in the house rather than ending the debate. All remarks made in the House must be addressed to the Speaker, and no Members may stand when the Speaker is standing.

The President of the Parliament is the presiding officer of the Parliament of Moldova. The current President of the Parliament is Igor Grosu since 29 July 2021.

The Marshal of the Senate of the Republic of Poland is a presiding officer of the Senate of Poland. He or she is also third person according to the Polish order of precedence, after President of the Republic of Poland and Sejm Marshal, and second in line to become Acting President of the Republic of Poland. Because of both precedence order and succession order, he or she is commonly referred to as the "third person in state". The person who functions as their second-in-command is the Deputy Marshal of the Senate of the Republic of Poland.

The President of the Chamber of Deputies is the presiding officer of the Chamber of Deputies. The office of President of the Chamber was established in 1844, although the name is not officially mentioned in the first Dominican constitution, Manuel Maria Valencia served as President of the Congress of Deputies who drafted the constitution He or she is simultaneously the Chamber's presiding officer, but not the leader of the body's majority party, and the institution's administrative head. Presidents also perform various other administrative and procedural functions, and represent their electoral district. Given these several roles and responsibilities, the President of the Chamber usually does not personally preside over debates. That duty is instead delegated to members of the House from the majority party. Neither does he or she regularly participate in floor debates or vote.

The President of the Senate of Romania is the senator elected to preside over the Senate meetings. The president of the Senate is also the president of the Standing Bureau of the Senate, and the first person in the presidential line of succession.

The Sahrawi National Council (SNC) or Sahrawi Parliament is the legislature of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. Its structure and competences are guided by the Constitution of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR). The present speaker since 2010 is Khatri Addouh.

The president of the Senate of Ceylon, was the presiding officer and the highest ranking-official of the Senate of Ceylon.

The president of the National Assembly of Serbia is the presiding officer of the National Assembly of Serbia. The president is elected by members of each new assembly for a term lasting four years

The Speaker of the House of Parliament of Sierra Leone is the presiding officer of Parliament of Sierra Leone. The speaker is the overall leader of Parliament, and is directly elected by sitting members of the House of Parliament of Sierra Leone. Like other members of Parliament, the speaker is address as the Honourable.

The Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana is the presiding officer of the Parliament of Ghana. The current speaker is Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin. He was elected on 7 January 2021.

The Speaker of the Parliament of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is the presiding officer of the chamber. The current Speaker of the Parliament is Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, in office since 20 August 2020. The Speaker fulfills a number of important functions in relation to the operation of the House, which is based upon the British Westminster Parliamentary system.

The Speaker of the Riksdag is the presiding officer of the national unicameral legislature in Sweden.

Stana Tomašević (1920–1983) was a Yugoslav Partisan officer during World War II, a model, and a Yugoslav politician and diplomat, serving as president of the Federal Chamber from 1979–82.

The President of the Senate of Trinidad and Tobago is generally elected from the government benches. He or she chairs debates in the chamber of the Senate of Trinidad and Tobago and stands in for the country's president during periods of absence or illness. A Vice-President of the Senate is also elected from among the senators. The current President of the Senate is Senator Christine Kangaloo.

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine is the presiding officer of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's unicameral parliament. The chairman presides over the parliament and its procedures. Chairmen are elected by open voting from the parliament's deputy ranks.

The president of the United States in Congress Assembled, known unofficially as the president of the Continental Congress and later as the president of the Congress of the Confederation, was the presiding officer of the Continental Congress, the convention of delegates that emerged as the first (transitional) national government of the United States during the American Revolution. The president was a member of Congress elected by the other delegates to serve as a neutral discussion moderator during meetings of Congress. Designed to be a largely ceremonial position without much influence, the office was unrelated to the later office of President of the United States. Upon the ratification of the Articles of Confederation in March 1781, the Continental Congress became the Congress of the Confederation. The membership of the Second Continental Congress carried over without interruption to the First Congress of the Confederation, as did the office of president.

The vice president of Uruguay is the person with the second highest position in the executive branch of the Uruguayan government, after the President of Uruguay. The Vice President replaces the elected President in case of his death or absence. The vice president is also an officer in the legislative branch, as president of the Chamber of Senators and of the General Assembly.
