This is a list of state prisons in Alabama. It does not include federal prisons or county jails located in the state of Alabama.

The state prison system in Alaska, comprising both pre-trial booking and long-term incarceration for sentenced prisoners, is a unified system run by the Alaska Department of Corrections. Prior to the establishment of the department during the early 1980s, corrections was a division of the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services. That department still operates juvenile correctional facilities through its Division of Juvenile Justice.

The Arkansas Department of Corrections (ADC) is the state law enforcement agency that oversees inmates and operates state prisons within the U.S. state of Arkansas. ADH consists of two divisions, the Division of Corrections (DOC) and the Division of Community Corrections (DCC), as well as the Arkansas Correctional School District. DOC is responsible for housing and rehabilitating people convicted of crimes by the courts of Arkansas. DOC maintains 20 prison facilities for inmates in 12 counties. DCC is responsible for adult parole and probation and offender reentry.

This is a list of state prisons in California operated by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). CDCR operates 35 adult prisons in California, with a design capacity of 85,083 incarcerated people. CDCR both owns and operates 34 of the state prisons; it additionally operates California City Correctional Facility, a prison leased from CoreCivic.

The Colorado Department of Corrections is the principal department of the Colorado state government that operates the state prisons. It has its headquarters in the Springs Office Park in unincorporated El Paso County, Colorado, near Colorado Springs. The Colorado Department of Corrections runs 20 state-run prisons and also has been affiliated with 7 for-profit prisons in Colorado, of which the state currently contracts with 3 for-profit prisons.

The Delaware Department of Correction is a state agency of Delaware that manages state prisons. It has its headquarters in the Central Administration Building in Dover. At one time the headquarters was located in Smyrna.

The Florida Department of Corrections is divided into four regions, each representing a specific geographical area of the state. Region I is the panhandle area, Region II is the north-east and north-central areas, Region III consist of central Florida and Region IV which covers the southern portion of the peninsula.

The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) is an agency of the U.S. state of Georgia operating state prisons. The agency is headquartered in Forsyth, on the former campus of Tift College.

The Georgia Department of Corrections operates prisons, transitional centers, probation detention centers, and substance use disorder treatment facilities. In addition, state inmates are also housed at private and county correctional facilities.

The Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) is the code department of the Illinois state government that operates the adult state prison system. The IDOC is led by a director appointed by the Governor of Illinois, and its headquarters are in Springfield.

The Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) operates state prisons in Indiana. It has its headquarters in Indianapolis. As of 2019, the Indiana Department of Correction housed 27,140 adult Inmates, 388 juvenile Inmates, employed 5,937 State Employed Staff, and 1,718 Contracted Staff.

The Iowa Department of Corrections is a state agency operating prisons in Iowa. It has its headquarters in Des Moines.

The Kansas Department of Corrections is a cabinet-level agency of Kansas that operates the state's correctional facilities, both juvenile and adult; the state's parole system; and the state's Prisoner Review Board. It is headquartered in Topeka.

The Kentucky Department of Corrections is a state agency of the Kentucky Justice & Public Safety Cabinet that operates state-owned adult correctional facilities, provides oversight for and sets standards for county jails. They also provide training, community based services, and oversees the state's Probation & Parole Division. The agency is headquartered in the Health Services Building in Frankfort.

The Maine Department of Corrections is a state agency of Maine that is responsible for the direction and general administrative supervision, guidance and planning of both adult and juvenile correctional facilities and programs within the state. The agency has its headquarters in Augusta. As of January 2016, the Maine DOC had 2,223 inmates in its custody.

The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) is a government agency of the State of Maryland that performs a number of functions, including the operation of state prisons. It has its headquarters in Towson, Maryland, an unincorporated community that is also the seat of Baltimore County, Maryland, United States, located north of Maryland's largest city of Baltimore. Additional offices for correctional institutions supervision are located on Reisterstown Road in northwest Baltimore.

The Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) is a state agency of Mississippi that operates prisons. It has its headquarters in Jackson. As of 2020 Burl Cain is the commissioner.

The Missouri Department of Corrections operates state prisons in the U.S. state of Missouri. It has its headquarters in Missouri's capital of Jefferson City.

The Montana Department of Corrections is a state agency of Montana that operates state prisons and manages community-corrections programs. The agency has its headquarters in Helena.

The New Mexico Corrections Department is a state agency of New Mexico, headquartered in unincorporated Santa Fe County, near Santa Fe. It the department operates corrections facilities, probate and parole programs, a prisoner reentry services, and an offender database.

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction is the administrative department of the Ohio state government. Ohio's prison system is the sixth-largest in America, with 27 state prisons and three facilities for juveniles. In December 2018, the number of inmates in Ohio totaled 49,255, with the prison system spending nearly $1.8 billion that year. ODRC headquarters are located in Columbus.

The South Dakota Department of Corrections is the agency that operates state prisons in the US state of South Dakota. It has its headquarters in Pierre.

The Washington State Department of Corrections (WADOC) is a department of the government of the state of Washington. WADOC is responsible for administering adult corrections programs operated by the State of Washington. This includes state correctional institutions and programs for people supervised in the community. Its headquarters are in Tumwater, Washington.

The West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation is an agency of the U.S. state of West Virginia within the Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety that operates the state's prisons, jails and juvenile detention facilities. The agency has its headquarters in the state's capital of Charleston. Until July 1, 2018, the agency was simply the "West Virginia Division of Corrections" and only operated the adult prisons. On July 1, 2018 the agency absorbed the former West Virginia Division of Juvenile Services and the former West Virginia Regional Jail Authority and assumed its current name.
