With three gold and two silver medals he was the most successful athlete at the 1912 Olympics. In 1913, he won two medals at the ISSF World Shooting Championships. His twin brother Eric competed alongside Gustaf at all those four Olympics.

He served as commander of Svea Life Guards (1936–1938), as Commandant in Stockholm (1938–1945) and as Defence District Commander of Stockholm Defence District (1942–1945) and Norrtälje Defence District (1943–1945). Cederschiöld also served as Chief of His Majesty's Military Staff (1950–1963). He also competed at the 1912 Summer Olympics.

He won a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics after having the best final round of all finalists and moving from fifth to second place. In the 2004 Olympics he finished second in the qualification round, but dropped to fifth place during the final round. Since then, he has won the 2005 ISSF World Cup Final, the 2008 ISSF World Cup Final, and ISSF World Cup competitions in 2007 and 2008, but failed to reach the final at the 2008 Olympics. Dahlby lives in Stockholm.

In 1948 he finished 24th in the 25 m rapid-fire pistol event. In 1952 he won a silver medal in modern pentathlon with the Swedish team, and placed 11th individually. He also took part in the 1948 Winter Olympics, in the winter pentathlon, which was held as a demonstration sport. He suffered a leg fracture in the downhill skiing event and had to withdraw.
