The July 2016 Qamishli bombings were a twin car bombing in a Rojavan-held district in the city of Qamishli, part of the al-Hasakah Governorate in Syria. The bombings killed more than 44 and more than 171 were wounded. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant claimed responsibility. The city of Qamishli has been the site of multiple car bombings since 2015.

On 5 September 2016, suicide bombers simultaneously exploded in the Syrian cities of Tartus, Homs, Damascus, and Hasakah. A car bomb detonated on a coastal highway in Tartus, killing more than five people, followed by a suicide bomber exploding in the crowd gathering in the area. A car bomb then hit a Syrian Army checkpoint in the Zahra district of Homs and killed two soldiers. A motorcycle bomb detonated near an Asayish checkpoint in Hasakah and killed at least five people, with an explosion in the capital city of Damascus following soon after.

The January 2017 Azaz bombing occurred on 7 January 2017 when a car bomb in front of a courthouse and near a market in the rebel-held city of Azaz, Syria detonated, killing at least 60 people, mostly civilians, and wounding around 50 others. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant was suspected and blamed for the attack.

On October 26–27, 2019, the United States conducted a special operation that resulted in the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the then-leader and self-proclaimed caliph of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist organization. The operation took place in the outskirts of Barisha, Idlib Governorate, Syria. According to General Kenneth "Frank" McKenzie, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) commander who oversaw the operation, Baghdadi killed himself along with two children when he detonated a suicide belt while seeking to evade the U.S. forces during the raid. The special forces that carried out the operation named their task force "Task Force 8-14" after the date of dead American hostage Kayla Mueller's birthday.
