12 Government of Mauritius

The Government of Mauritius is the main authority of the executive power in the Republic of Mauritius. The head of the Government is the Prime Minister of Mauritius, who manages the main agenda of the Government and direct the ministers.

The Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Mauritius is the official council which advises the President of the Republic in the making of major decisions. It is led by the Prime Minister and a total of 23 ministers and the Attorney General, who is considered to be a cabinet member. The constitution of the Republic provides a cabinet under the leadership of the Prime Minister that must be appointed by the President after each general elections.

The Chief Commissioner of Rodrigues is the gubernatorial head of the region of Rodrigues since it gained autonomy within the Republic of Mauritius on 12 October 2002. The Commissioner is selected from the party holding the majority of seats at the regional assembly.

Mauritius has strong and friendly relations with the West, with South Asian countries and with the countries of southern and eastern Africa. It is a member of the World Trade Organization, the Commonwealth of Nations, La Francophonie, the African Union, the Southern Africa Development Community, the Indian Ocean Commission, COMESA, and the recently formed Indian Ocean Rim Association. Her Majesty Elizabeth II was the head of state of Mauritius.

The List of Constitutional offices of Mauritius are the offices that are regulated by the constitution of the republic as being legal public offices that have been occupied since 1968. These are known as the key positions in the political jargon. As Mauritius follows the British constitutional system, some offices are not regulated by its constitution but by precedent and conventions. Examples include the position of Vice Prime Minister which was maintained from 1983 to 1990 and from 2005 up to now. Governments from 1990 to 2005 did not nominate any Vice Prime Ministers as they were not constitutionally required to do so.

Between independence in 1968 and becoming a republic in 1992, Mauritius was an independent sovereign state that shared its head of state with the United Kingdom and other states headed by Elizabeth II.

Five people have served as Prime Minister of Mauritius since the office was established in 1968, when independence from the United Kingdom was proclaimed. Additionally, one person has served as Chief Minister of Mauritius, the preceding office which existed from 1961 to 1968, while Mauritius still was a British crown colony.

The prime minister of Mauritius is the head of government of Mauritius. He presides over the Cabinet of Ministers which advises the President of the Country and is collectively responsible to the National Assembly for any advice given and for all action done by or under the authority of any Minister in the execution of his office.

Elizabeth II was Queen of Mauritius from 1968 to 1992. Mauritius was a constitutional monarchy with Elizabeth as head of state. The Queen was also the monarch of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms. Her constitutional roles in Mauritius were delegated to a Governor-General.

The Supreme Court of Mauritius is the highest court of Mauritius and is the final court of appeal in the Mauritian judicial system. It was established in its current form in 1850, replacing the Cour d'Appel established in 1808 during the French administration and has a permanent seat in Port Louis. There is a right of appeal from the Supreme Court of Mauritius directly to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in London. On 30 July 2020, a new building was inaugurated jointly by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth.
