The next big cities are Hanover 50 kilometres (31 mi) and Hildesheim 40 kilometres (25 mi) away.

The Ōma Nuclear Power Plant is a nuclear plant under construction in Ōma, Aomori, Japan. It will be operated by the Electric Power Development Company (J-Power). The reactor would be unique for Japan in that it would be capable of using a 100% MOX fuel core, as requested by the 1995 decision by the Japanese Atomic Energy Commission. Phipps Bend Nuclear Plant is a cancelled nuclear power plant of the Tennessee Valley Authority. The Tennessee Valley Authority board voted on August 6th, 1981, to defer construction of this power plant in Surgoinsville. Construction never resumed, the project canceled in 1982 due to lower load growth than forecast. A 1 MW solar farm was built at the site in 2017.
