Carsharing or car sharing or car clubs (UK) is a model of car rental where people rent cars for short periods of time, often by the hour. It differs from traditional car rental in that the owners of the cars are often private individuals themselves, and the carsharing facilitator is generally distinct from the car owner. Carsharing is part of a larger trend of shared mobility.

Autolib' was an electric car sharing service which was inaugurated in Paris, France, in December 2011. It closed on 31 July 2018. It was operated by the Bolloré industry and complemented the city's bike sharing system, Velib', which was set up in 2007. The Autolib' service maintained a fleet of all-electric Bolloré Bluecars for public use on a paid subscription basis, employing a citywide network of parking and charging stations. As of 3 July 2016, 3,980 Bluecars had been registered for the service and had more than 126,900 registered subscribers; Autolib' furthermore offered 1,084 electric car stations in Paris agglomeration with 5,935 charging points.

Bluecity was a London-based company providing electric car-sharing services, starting from 26 April 2017 to 10 February 2020. The cars provided by the service were Bolloré Bluecars by the Bolloré group.

BlueSG is a Singaporean company providing electric car sharing and electric car charging services. Announced in September 2017, the company, a subsidiary of Goldbell, launched the service in December of the same year, with 30 charging stations and 80 all-electric Bolloré Bluecar for public use on a paid subscription basis.

Bundesverband CarSharing e.V. is the industry association of the traditional car sharing organisations in Germany. BCS represents the political interests of the car sharing industry on a regional and national level, collaborates with other transport organisations and offers general information and publicity for car sharing. BCS also provides services to its members, like market research, and publishes yearly statistical data on the car sharing industry in Germany, which also include the car sharing organisations which are not member of BCS.

Car Next Door is an Australian company that facilitates peer-to-peer car rental, a system by which individuals may rent privately owned vehicles on an hourly or daily basis to other registered users of the service. It is a flexible alternative to car rental companies due to the availability of short-term hire, vehicles distributed throughout cities, flexible pickup and return times and competitive pricing, particularly for peak seasons and locations. Peer-to-peer car rental is an example of ″collaborative consumption″, where skills and assets are shared or traded between neighbours for sustainability and economic benefit. It currently operates in locations across Australia including Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Hobart, Canberra, Adelaide and Perth and has announced plans to expand to other Australian cities and airports.

City Carshare was a carsharing program that operated in the San Francisco Bay Area, starting in 2001. It rented vehicles by the hour. In November 2016, the company effectively ceased operations, when Getaround, a for-profit, carsharing company, took over City CarShare's fleet, parking spaces, and member base.

Didi Chuxing Technology Co., formerly named Didi Dache (嘀嘀打车) and Didi Kuaidi, is a Chinese vehicle for hire company headquartered in Beijing with over 550 million users and tens of millions of drivers. The company provides app-based transportation services, including taxi hailing, private car hailing, social ride-sharing, and bike sharing; on-demand delivery services; and automobile services, including sales, leasing, financing, maintenance, fleet operation, electric vehicle charging, and co-development of vehicles with automakers. The company is a subsidiary of Xiaoju Kuaizhi Inc.

Enterprise Car Club is a British car club operator. Established as CityCarClub in 2000, it was acquired by the American company Enterprise Rent-A-Car in 2015, and renamed Enterprise Car Club in 2016.

EvCard is a Chinese carsharing company launched in Shanghai by SAIC Group in 2015.

Evo is a carsharing service in Greater Vancouver and Victoria, created by the British Columbia Automobile Association. The company offers exclusively Toyota Prius Hybrid vehicles with roof-top bike racks and features one-way point-to-point rentals. Users are charged by the minute, with hourly and daily rates available. Launched in March 2015, it currently serves most of Vancouver, and selected destinations in neighboring cities. In August 2021, the service was brought to Victoria. The company is considering moving into the tri-cities area in the future.

Flexcar is a vehicle subscription company based in Boston, MA. They offer weekly subscriptions to a variety of cars with touchless pickup from locations in Boston, Nashville, and Atlanta. Flexcars include maintenance and insurance and customers can cancel their subscription anytime without penalty.

Flexicar is an Melbourne membership-based carsharing service owned by Hertz. The company provides automobile reservations to its members, billable by the hour or day. Flexicar was co-founded in 2004 by Monique Conheady and five other partners. In 2008, Conheady was awarded the Winston Churchill Fellowship to investigate public transport systems all over the world that use the latest technology and incorporate new forms of transport like bicycle sharing.

Flinkster is the name of the carsharing operations of the railway and logistics company Deutsche Bahn (DB) in Germany, managed by Deutsche Bahn Connect GmbH formerly called DB Rent, which is a subsidiary of DB Fuhrpark, which is a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn AG. Flinkster was originally called DB Carsharing. Flinkster offers own cars and access to those of regional partners, i.e. other car sharing companies .,

GIG Car Share is a carsharing service in parts of the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, and Seattle, created by A3 Ventures . The company operates a fleet of Toyota Prius Hybrid vehicles and all-electric Chevy Bolts, with roof-top bike racks. It offers one-way point-to-point rentals.

GoCar is the first Carsharing service in Ireland. GoCar members can book cars online or via the app for as little as an hour, then unlock with their phone or GoCard; the keys are in the car, with fuel, insurance and city parking all included. Rates start from €8 per hour, with 50 km of driving included on each trip. GoCar now has over 10,000 members and operates a fleet of over 300 cars across 200+ locations in Ireland. Drivers can visit GoCar.ie to request a GoCar in their community. It launched in Cork in September 2008, with the support of Cork City Council as a pilot scheme. Cork City Council gave GoCar use of 3 car parking locations in Cork City as part of a wider pilot scheme.

I-GO was a Chicago-based car sharing organization owned by Enterprise Holdings. I-GO was established in 2002 by the Center for Neighborhood Technology as an independent 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating and implementing new strategies that make urban communities more livable and environmentally sustainable. I-GO was sold to Enterprise Holdings in May 2013 and re-branded as Enterprise CarShare.

Kandi Technologies Group, Inc. is a Chinese battery and electric vehicle manufacturer. Kandi is listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange with ticker KNDI.

Kangaride is a private Canadian company founded in 2006 that provides a ridesharing platform for posting and booking long-distance rides in North America. Kangaride appeared on Dragons Den Season 7 episode 19.

Maven was a car sharing service launched by General Motors (GM) in 2016. It provided services such as carsharing and peer-to-peer car sharing for personal use and also rented to drivers of gig economy professions such as Uber and Lyft. It operated in select cities in the United States and Canada and had been described as an AirBnB for cars. It shut down operations in 2020.

Modo is a member-owned carshare operator in British Columbia. It was incorporated in 1997, making it the oldest carsharing organization in the area, first carshare co-op in North America and the first carshare in the English-speaking world. Modo amalgamated with the Victoria Carshare Co-op in 2015 and now serves 14 municipalities in the Lower Mainland and Greater Victoria.

Momo Car-Sharing was a car-sharing program conducted by Intelligent Energy Europe to promote alternatives to car ownership. It had a total budget of €2,693,644, half of which was co-financed by the European Union (EU). The project name momo was taken from the phrase "more options for energy efficient mobility through car-sharing".

Carsharing in Moscow is a rapidly developing type of public transport in the city. As of January 2020 Moscow has the largest fleet of carsharing vehicles in the world which counts more than 30,000 cars ahead of such megacities as Tokyo, Beijing and Shanghai. In Moscow, more than 150,000 trips are made by carsharing cars every day. The largest carsharing operator in Moscow is Delimobil which has a fleet of 17,000 cars.

Nekso offers vehicle for hire services in Central and South America. Its mobile app allows users to book a taxi and track it in real time.

One-way carsharing is a type of carsharing that enables users to begin and end their trip at different locations. The pick-up and drop-off locations can be either restricted to traditional rental stations, or can be anywhere within an operational area in what is called free-floating carsharing.

ReachNow was a carsharing service operated by BMW Group in Seattle, Washington, Portland, Oregon and Brooklyn, New York. It launched in 2016 and ended its services in Seattle and Portland on July 17, 2019. It used a mobile app for car reservations and operated a fleet of over 1,000 vehicles. It was one of three car-sharing services in the city of Seattle, competing with car2go and Zipcar. ReachNow was similar to another BMW Group service DriveNow, but was focused on North American cities starting with Seattle. Unlike DriveNow which is a joint-venture with Sixt, ReachNow is a fully owned BMW subsidiary, with RideCell rather than Sixt, providing the technology platform.

RideShare Delaware is DART First State's program to reduce traffic and encourage alternative transportation arrangements. The program is supported by state and federal funds as a part of Delaware's efforts to maintain air quality. RideShare works in partnership with local and regional agencies towards meeting Federal Air Quality Standards. It helps form both carpools and vanpools. It also offers special programs for students and Delaware employers.

Slugging, also known as casual carpooling, is the practice of forming ad hoc, informal carpools for purposes of commuting, essentially a variation of ride-share commuting and hitchhiking. A driver picks up these non-paying passengers at key locations, as having these additional passengers means that the driver can qualify to use an HOV lane or enjoy toll reduction. While the practice is most common and most publicized in the congested Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, slugging also occurs in San Francisco, Houston, and other cities.

Turo is an American peer-to-peer carsharing company based in San Francisco, United States. The company allows private car owners to rent out their vehicles via an online and mobile interface in over 56 countries.

UhaulCarShare was a for-profit carsharing service offered by U-Haul in nearly 40 cities in the United States until the program was shut down in February 2020 just ahead of the COVID-19 pandemic. Those with a UhaulCarShare membership had use of a car, billable by the hour or by the day. However, use was limited to three days at a time. Most often, Uhaul Car Share vehicles were operated in communities with colleges and/or universities nearby. "The goal of [Uhaul] Car Share is to give people an alternative to owning second and third cars, and to increase the use of public transit."

WhizzGo was a United Kingdom car rental company that provided a pay-by-the-hour car rental service in cities across the UK.

The Witkar was one of the first technology-based carsharing projects in the world. It is the invention of Dutch social inventor and politician Luud Schimmelpennink, an industrial designer and at the time Amsterdam city councillor. The project was opened by minister Irene Vorrink on 21 March 1974.

Yandex.Drive is a Russian carsharing service owned by Yandex. The service in Moscow, Moscow Oblast, Saint-Petersburg, Kazan and Sochi.The cothlaunched in February 2018. The vehicle park consists of Kia Rio, Kia Rio X-Line, Renault Kaptur, Skoda Octavia, Skoda Rapid, Nissan Leaf, Nissan Qashqai, Audi A3, Audi Q3, Porsche Macan, Porsche 911 Carrera, Ford Mustang of 1965 and 1969, BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Volkswagen Polo, Genesis G70, Citroen Jumpy and Volkswagen Transporter of January 2020 its vehicle fleet is over 21000 cars. According to the Financial Times, Yandex.Drive is the largest carsharing company in the world.

Yourdrive is a New Zealand peer-to-peer carsharing company that no longer runs any business operations. Prior to ceasing operations it facilitated a system in which individuals may rent their privately owned vehicles on an hourly, daily or weekly basis to other registered users of the service. Owners set their rental prices and earn a 60 percent commission from the rental revenue. Prior to going out of business it operated throughout New Zealand with vehicles in Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown and Dunedin.

Zimride by Enterprise Holdings is an American carpool program that matches inter-city drivers and passengers through social networking services. It is offered to universities and businesses as a matchmaking service. The company was founded in May 2007. After the launch of the Lyft app in May 2012 for intra-city rides, the Lyft app rapidly grew and became the focus of the company. Zimride officially renamed as Lyft in May 2013, and the Zimride service was sold to Enterprise Holdings in July 2013. As of July 2013, the service had over 350,000 users and has partnerships with Facebook and Zipcar.

Zipcar is an American car-sharing company and a subsidiary of Avis Budget Group. Zipcar provides automobile reservations to its members, billable by the minute, hour or day; members may have to pay a monthly or annual membership fee in addition to car reservations charges. Zipcar was founded in 2000 by Antje Danielson and Robin Chase.
