Baidu was incorporated in January 2000 by Robin Li and Eric Xu. The Baidu search engine is currently the fourth largest website in the Alexa Internet rankings. Baidu has origins in RankDex, an earlier search engine developed by Robin Li in 1996, before he founded Baidu in 2000.

On 22 August 2013, an offer of permanent free 2 Terabytes storage for users was announced.
Baidu Baike is a Chinese-language collaborative online encyclopedia owned by the Chinese technology company Baidu. It was launched in April 2006. As of November 2019, it had 16 million entries and more than 6.9 million editors.
