The ship is named after the Bocayna strait which separates the two islands it serves.

Castalia was a 1,533 GRT twin-hulled paddle steamer that was built in 1874 by the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company, Leamouth, London for the English Channel Steamship Company. She was acquired by the London, Chatham and Dover Railway (LCDR) in 1878 but had already been laid up by then and was not operated by the LCDR. In 1883, she was sold to the Metropolitan Asylums Board and converted to a hospital ship. She served until 1904 and was scrapped in 1905.

HSC Karolina is a high speed catamaran passenger ship owned by Croatian shipping company Jadrolinija. The ship was built by FBM Marinteknik of Singapore in 1989 as Estrala do Mar. She has five sisters, of which Dubravka, Judita, and Novalja were also bought by Jadrolinija. In 1995 she was renamed Supercat 3. In 2001 passed to Philippine Fast Ferry Corporation, and was managed by the Supercat Fast Ferry Corporation. Jadrolinija bought her in December 2004 and renamed to Karolina. The ship entered the service in May 2005, sailing on route Rijeka-Rab-Novalja.

Built in 1982 at Westermoen Hydrofoil shipyard, the ship is a catamaran 29.00 metres in length with a capacity of about 200 passengers. Built as Venture 84, the ship was in service with the French ferry operator Emeraude Lines from 1983 to 1996, serving a route between the Channel Islands and France. From 1996 to 2008, the ship was operated by Cypriot ferry operator Fergün Denizcilik as Fergün Express III.

The 382-metre-long (1,253 ft), 124-metre-wide (407 ft) vessel is the world's largest vessel by gross tonnage and was built in South Korea by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering at a cost of €2.6 billion. It commenced offshore operations in August 2016.

The Plastiki is a 60-foot (18 m) catamaran made out of 12,500 reclaimed plastic bottles and other recycled PET plastic and waste products. Michael Pawlyn of Exploration Architecture worked on the concept design with David de Rothschild and helped to shape some of the key ideas. The craft was built using cradle to cradle design philosophies and features many renewable energy systems, including solar panels, wind and trailing propeller turbines, and bicycle generators. The frame was designed by Australian naval architect Andrew Dovell. The boat's name is a play on the 1947 Kon-Tiki raft used to sail across the Pacific by Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl, and its voyage roughly followed the same route.

MV Red Jet 3 is a passenger catamaran ferry formerly operated by Red Funnel on their route from Southampton to Cowes on the Isle of Wight along with sister ships Red Jet 4, Red Jet 5 and Red Jet 6. She was built by FB Marine on the Isle of Wight, United Kingdom at a cost of £2.73 million and entered service in 1998. The ship reached a speed of 37.4 Knots during a publicity cruise on 14 July 1998 before entering into regular service on 27 July 1998. This entry into service meant that the older Shearwater 5 and Shearwater 6 hydrofoils were no longer needed to provide backup for the Red Funnel high speed service and they were withdrawn. The high speed fleet then consisted of Red Jet 1, Red Jet 2 and Red Jet 3.

Tarantella was a 33 ft (10 m) sailing catamaran designed by Nathanael Greene Herreshoff. She was launched in 1877, a year after Herreshoff's smaller catamaran Amaryllis won the 1876 New York Centennial Regatta, which resulted in multihulls being banned from regattas. The Tarantella was 15 inches (38 cm) longer than her two patented sisterships Teaser and John Gilpin. She was eventually exported to the United Kingdom. The brother of her designer described these catamarans as outstanding upwind performers:I can, with a good whole-sail breeze, beat to windward faster, by a mile an hour at least, than any other sailing vessel afloat.

It was built in Australia for a fast ferry service on Lake Ontario between Toronto, Ontario, Canada and Rochester, New York, United States. After the ferry service failed, the boat was sold in 2007 and operated in the Strait of Gibraltar. From 2007–2012, the boat operated in Morocco on a Spain–Morocco service. In 2012–13, the ship operated on Kattegatruten's Aarhus–Kalundborg route in Denmark until October 2013 when the route was cancelled.
