Germinal was the seventh month in the French Republican Calendar. The month was named after the Latin word germen, "germination". Germinal was the first month of the spring quarter. It started March 21 or March 22, and ended April 19 or April 20. It follows Ventôse and precedes Floréal.
Martius or mensis Martius ("March") was the first month of the ancient Roman year until possibly as late as 153 BC. After that time, it was the third month, following Februarius (February) and preceding Aprilis (April). Martius was one of the few Roman months named for a deity, Mars, who was regarded as an ancestor of the Roman people through his sons Romulus and Remus.

Marzas is the name given to the songs with which the month of March is received and the arrival of the spring season is celebrated. They are sung the last day of February or the first of March in Cantabria and nearby areas in northern Spain. The young singers, called marceros, are given away in exchange for traditional products such as cornbread, black pudding, chorizo, etc.

Ventôse was the sixth month in the French Republican Calendar. The month was named after the Latin word ventosus, which means windy.
