In 1928, against England, Maurice Fernandes became the first Guyanese player to represent the West Indies when he played in their inaugural Test match. In 1930 Fernandes became the first of seven Guyanese players to captain the West Indies. Clive Lloyd has captained the West Indies Test side a record 74 times.

In cricketing terms the Leeward Islands are made up from the following nations and territories: Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla, Montserrat, British Virgin Islands, U.S. Virgin Islands and Sint Maarten. Four Leeward Islanders have captained the West Indies, the Antiguan Viv Richards has made the most Test appearances as captain, leading the side on 50 occasions.

Five players from Trinidad and Tobago were included in the West Indies's first ever Test match, against England in 1928. Nelson Betancourt became the first Trinidadian to captain the West Indies when he led the side against England in 1930. Of the nine other Trinidadians to have captained the West Indies, Brian Lara has led the side the most times in Tests with 47 appearances. Lara has captained the West Indies 125 times in ODIs, which is a West Indies record.

In cricketing terms the Windward Islands are made up from the following nations: Dominica, Grenada, Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The current captain of the West Indies team is the Saint Lucian Darren Sammy, who is the only player from the Windwards to hold this position.
