The 16 municipalities of the Åland Islands are divided into three sub-regions: Mariehamn, the countryside and the archipelago.

Municipalities are the basic administrative divisions of Albania. Prior to 2015, there were two types of municipalities in Albania: municipalities with an urban character called bashki, and municipalities with a rural character called komunë (commune). Municipalities are all divided into at least two "administrative units", which are sometimes referred to as "municipal units" or "units of local governance". Administrative units are composed of one or more cities, villages, or neighbourhoods and constitute the third- and final-level administrative divisions of Albania.

The municipalities of Algeria form the third level of administrative subdivisions of Algeria. As of 2002, there were 1,541 municipalities in the country.

A municipality in Armenia referred to as community, is an administrative subdivision consisting of a settlement or a group of settlements that enjoys local self-government. The settlements are classified as either towns or villages (Armenian: գյուղեր gyugher, singular. The administrative centre of a community could either be an urban settlement or a rural settlement.

This is a list of current Municipalities of Denmark. The number of municipalities was reduced from 270 to the current 98 on Monday January 1, 2007. The archipelago of Ertholmene is not part of any municipality or region but is administered by the Ministry of Defence.

The provinces of the Dominican Republic are divided into two or more municipalities with the exception of the Distrito Nacional which consists of only one municipality – Santo Domingo. They are the second-level political and administrative subdivisions of the country.

The Faroe Islands are administratively divided in 29 municipalities (kommunur), with about 120 cities and villages. Until December 31, 2008, there were 34 municipalities, and until December 31, 2004, there were 48 municipalities. In the coming years the number of Faroese municipalities is expected to drop to somewhere between 7 and 15, as there is currently a rationale towards municipal amalgamation and a decentralization of public services. In 1998 it was suggested that no municipality should have fewer than 2,000 inhabitants, but whether this will be true is a political question. The Faroese government has furthermore decided not to conduct forced, top-down amalgamation, but to leave the process to the free will of the municipalities. In many small municipalities there is some resistance to the amalgamation process, and as a result two kinds of municipalities are being created: large municipalities (town-municipalities) that are eager to attract smaller municipalities into amalgamation, and small municipalities which are either trying to avoid amalgamation or seek to amalgamate with other small municipalities. The geographically large Sunda municipality is an example of this. The larger municipalities are organized in Kommunusamskipan Føroya (KFS) and the smaller are organized in Føroya Kommunufelag (FKF).

The municipalities of Iceland are local administrative areas in Iceland that provide a number of services to their inhabitants such as kindergartens, elementary schools, waste management, social services, public housing, public transportation, services to senior citizens and handicapped people. They also govern zoning and can voluntarily take on additional functions if they have the budget for it. The autonomy of municipalities over their own matters is guaranteed by the Icelandic constitution.

Lithuania is divided into three layers of administrative divisions. The first-level division consists of 10 counties. These are sub-divided into 60 municipalities, which in turn are further sub-divided into over 500 smaller groups, known as elderships.

As of January 2020, there are 355 municipalities plus 3 special municipalities in the Netherlands. The latter is the status of three of the six island territories that make up the Dutch Caribbean. Norway is divided into 11 administrative regions, called counties, and 356 municipalities. The capital city Oslo is considered both a county and a municipality.

Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, United States, is divided into 13 incorporated municipalities. State law defines the two kinds of municipalities present in the county: four boroughs and nine townships. In the 2010 census, the population of Sullivan County was 6,428, making it an "Eighth Class County", defined by Pennsylvania law as "having a population of less than 20,000 inhabitants". Its county seat is Laporte, which was the smallest county seat in Pennsylvania by population, as of 2001.

The districts and autonomous regions are further subdivided into 308 municipalities of Portugal. Usually, a municipality has the name of its biggest town or city, or at least, of its historically most important town or city, however, the municipality is, usually, much larger than the city or town after which it is named.

Rhode Island is a state located in the Northeastern United States. According to the 2010 United States Census, Rhode Island is the 8th least populous state with 1,052,567 inhabitants and the smallest by land area spanning 1,033.81 square miles (2,677.6 km2) of land. It is divided into 39 incorporated municipalities, including 8 cities and 31 towns, grouped into 5 historical counties that have no municipal functions as the state has no county level of government. The entire area of the state is governed by town administrations except for areas within the boundaries of cities. While some communities within towns and cities are census-designated places, there are no unincorporated areas in the state.

Since 2009, the Uruguayan departments have been subdivided into municipalities. In the municipal elections of 2010 municipal authorities were elected for the first time and they assumed office months later. Currently there are 112 municipalities in Uruguay.
