Districts of Albania

Districts were geographic subdivisions of Albania that functioned from 1913-2000. Between 1991 and 2000 Albania was divided into 36 districts, which were grouped into 12 prefectures or counties. In 2000, with Law No. 8653, dated 31.07.2000, districts were abolished as administrative units, being replaced by counties (qark) as second level of administrative division.

Berat District was one of the thirty-six districts of Albania. It had a population of 128,410 in 2001, and an area of 915 km². It is in the centre of the country, and its capital was Berat. Another large population centre in this district was Ura Vajgurore. Its territory is now part of Berat County: the municipalities of Berat, Dimal, Poliçan (partly) and Kuçovë (partly).

Bulqizë District was one of the thirty-six districts of Albania. It had a population of 42,985 in 2001, and an area of 718 km². Located in the east of the country, its capital was Bulqizë. Its territory is now part of Dibër County, and corresponds with that of the present municipality of Bulqizë.

The district is in the south of the country, and its capital was Delvinë. Its territory is now part of Vlorë County: the municipalities of Delvinë and Finiq (partly).

Elbasan District was one of the thirty-six districts of Albania. It had a population of 224,974 in 2001, and an area of 1,290 km2. It was in the centre of the country, and its capital was Elbasan. Its territory is now part of Elbasan County: the municipalities of Elbasan, Belsh and Cërrik.

Gjirokastër District was one of the thirty-six districts of Albania. It had a population of 55,991 in 2001, and an area of 1,137 km². It contained a large Greek ethnic minority. It is in the south of the country, and its capital was Gjirokastër. Its territory is now part of Gjirokastër County: the municipalities of Gjirokastër, Dropull and Libohovë.

Its territory is now part of Elbasan County: the municipalities of Librazhd and Prrenjas.

Its territory is now part of Lezhë County, and is coterminous with the present municipality of Mirditë.

The area is known for its massive chestnuts forests and the river Valbonë, as well a rich folk culture.
