A seismic anomaly has been observed in the upper mantle beneath the Eifel volcanic area and interpreted as indicating the presence of a mantle plume. Several predictions of the plume hypothesis are not fulfilled, however, and it has been proposed that the volcanic activity in this area is a result of passive melting due to lithospheric/crustal extension and shallow convective processes related to the ongoing subduction of the Eurasian plate as part of the Alpine orogeny.
