WA hot spring, hydrothermal spring, or geothermal spring is a spring produced by the emergence of geothermally heated groundwater onto the surface of the Earth. The groundwater is heated either by shallow bodies of magma or by circulation through faults to hot rock deep in the Earth's crust. In either case, the ultimate source of the heat is radioactive decay of naturally occurring radioactive elements in the Earth's mantle, the layer beneath the crust.
WThere are hot springs on all continents and in many countries around the world. Countries that are renowned for their hot springs include Honduras, Canada, Chile, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, India, Romania, Fiji and the United States, but there are interesting and unique hot springs in many other places as well.
WThe al Thowarah hot spring, also called the Nakhal spring, is located a few kilometres from the Nakhal Fort in Oman, located off the road that connects Birka with Rustaq. It is a green area where a spring forms a stream in a wadi (valley).
WAs Burgas are hot springs in the historic center of Ourense, in Galicia, Spain. They include Burga do Medio, which is infused with gas, Burga de Arriba and a Burga de Abaixo. The waters are similar to those of Carlsbad, and gush from granite rock to the west of the town at almost the boiling point. The hot mineral waters gush at 80 gallons per minute.
WThe Boiling Lake is a flooded fumarole located in Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a World Heritage Site on the island of Dominica. The lake, located 6.5 miles (10.5 km) east of Dominica's capital Roseau, is filled with bubbling greyish-blue water that is usually enveloped in a cloud of vapour. The Boiling Lake is approximately 200 to 250 feet across and is the second-largest hot lake in the world after Frying Pan Lake, located in Waimangu Valley near Rotorua, New Zealand.
WThe Kanniya Hot Springs is a site with hot wells located in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. There are seven wells in a square shape. Wells are only 3–4 feet deep and you can clearly see the bottom. The temperature is considerably high but vary slightly from one spring to another. Wells run out of water, when 10-15 buckets of water are taken out.
WThe Kochbrunnen in Wiesbaden is the most famous hot spring in city. It is a sodium chloride hot spring. Its name refers to the water temperature of about 66 °C.
WThe Ma'in Hot Springs also known as Hammamat Ma'in are a series of hot mineral springs and waterfalls located between Madaba and the Dead Sea in Madaba Governorate, Jordan.
WMoulay Yacoub is a spa town and municipality located 21 km northwest of Fez, Morocco. It is the capital of Moulay Yacoub Province and reported a population of 4612 in the 2014 Moroccan census. The baths use water pumped from 1500 m below ground and reach a temperature of 54 °C.
WSoborom is a group of hot springs with accompanying fumaroles and mud volcanoes in the Tibesti Mountains of Chad. Three dispersed groups of vents are active there, some of which are used as spas by the local population.
WThermalia is a thematic centre dedicated to the hot spring culture and is found in Caldes de Montbui (Catalonia).
WTihoubar or Aïne Tihoubar is a settlement and hot spring of 45 degrees Celsius in the Sahara Desert of eastern Algeria, Illizi Province. It is located roughly 300 kilometres (190 mi) by air northeast of Tamanrasset, and about 175 kilometres (109 mi) northwest of Ghat, Libya. It lies in a valley, and the spring is said to bubble "amongst the undergrowth at the foot of a palm tree."
