Cola became popular worldwide after pharmacist John Pemberton invented Coca-Cola, a trademarked brand, in 1886, which was later imitated by other manufacturers. Most colas contain caffeine, which was originally sourced from the kola nut, leading to the drink's name, though other sources are now also used. The original cola drink by Pemberton contained caffeine from coca leaves as well. His non-alcoholic recipe was inspired by the coca wine of pharmacist Angelo Mariani, created in 1863.

Hamoud Boualem is an Algerian soft drink manufacturing company, producing fizzy drinks popular in Algeria and exported to France, the United Kingdom, and Canada, mainly for consumption by Algerian emigrants. Founded in 1878 with the building of its first factory in the Belcourt neighborhood of Algiers, it is among the country's oldest companies. Their products include sodas such as "Selecto", "Hamoud", "Slim", and various flavors of syrup. Their head offices are located at 201 rue Hassiba Ben Bouali, Algiers.

Kalimotxo or calimocho is a drink consisting of equal parts red wine and cola-based soft drink. The concoction dates back to the 1920s in Spain, but was relatively uncommon as Coca-Cola was not manufactured in the country at that time. The first Coca-Cola factory opened in Spain in 1953, and the drink was "reborn" and given its current name in 1972. It has since become a classic of the Basque Country region.
