
The Romanian word lăutar denotes a class of musicians, traditionally members of a professional clan of Romani musicians, also called țigani lăutari. The term is derived from lăută, the Romanian word for lute. Lăutari usually perform in bands, called taraf.

Other than that, his repertoire includes duets with Serbian singers, including Indira Radić, Marta Savić and Jelena Karleuša.

Šaban Bajramović, nicknamed Šabi (Шаби), was a Serbian vocalist and recording artist of Arlije Romani ethnicity. He was one of the most internationally critically acclaimed Romani singer-songwriters. Due to his eminent impact on music in Eastern Europe, he was dubbed the "King of Romani music".

His son, Ștefan Bănică Jr., is also well known in the entertainment industry.

Considered one of the all-time greatest flamenco singers, he was noted for his collaborations with Paco de Lucía and Tomatito, and the three of them were of major importance to the revival of flamenco in the second half of the 20th century.

David Peña Dorantes is a Romani pianist and composer from Andalusia (Spain) known for his compositions and performances of flamenco. His music has been influenced by Debussy and jazz. His first album, Orobroy, released in 1998, received both critical and public acclaim. His second album, released in 2001 and titled Sur, was recorded in Paris, Sevilla, and Sofia, and was also well received. His third album, Without Walls!, was released in 2012. Dorantes has collaborated with prominent artists such as Lole Montoya, Alba Molina, Susheela Raman, El Barrio, Arcángel, Carmen Linares, Miguel Poveda, and José Mercé.

Gheorghe A. Lăzăreanu-Lăzurică or George Lăzurică, also known as Lăzărescu-Lăzurică or Lăzărică, was a leader of the Romani (Gypsy) community in Romania, also remembered for his support of Romania's interwar far-right. Originally a musician, he became active within the General Association of Gypsies in Romania, but broke away to establish the General Union of Roma in Romania. From September 1933 to May 1934, he was also a "Voivode of the Gypsies", recognized as such by various local tribes. He and his followers came to resent ethnic designation as "Gypsies", and pleaded for the usage of "Romanies". Lăzurică also tried to introduce the term Zgripți as a reference to the people's legendary ancestors.
