WThe Chūrui Naumann Elephant Museum opened in Makubetsu, Hokkaidō, Japan in 1988. It commemorates the chance discovery of a fossilized Naumann's elephant in Chūrui, now Makubetsu, on 26 July 1969, during construction work on a farm road: the youth who unearthed the initial piece with his pickaxe crying out "this is an elephant's tooth" (「これは象の歯だ」). During the course of three subsequent excavations, some forty-seven bones were recovered, representing 70–80% of the total skeleton. Reconstructed elephants based on the finds at Chūrui may now be found at twenty-two museums in Japan and the rest of the world.

WThe Imaichi Pumped Storage Power Station is a large pumped-storage hydroelectric power station in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. With a total installed capacity of 1,050 megawatts (1,410,000 hp), it is one of the largest pumped-storage power stations in Japan. The facility is run by the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO). The power plant started operation in July 1988 with a capacity of 350 MW. The other two units entered operation in December 1991. The plant is one of the many large scale pure pumped-storage plants built in Japan since the 1970s to compensate for the increased penetration of base-load nuclear power and peak load from cooling and air-conditioning.

The track level is about 100 m (330 ft) below the seabed and 240 m (790 ft) below sea level. The tunnel is part of the standard gauge Hokkaido Shinkansen and the narrow gauge Kaikyō Line of the Hokkaido Railway Company 's Tsugaru-Kaikyō Line. The name Seikan comes from combining the on'yomi readings of the first characters of Aomori (青森), the nearest major city on the Honshu side of the strait, and Hakodate (函館), the nearest major city on the Hokkaido side.
