Fear Factor was cancelled by NBC in 2006 after six seasons and 144 episodes, briefly revived in 2011 for a nine-episode seventh season, cancelled for a second time in 2012 and revived for a third time in 2017 to air on MTV with rapper and actor Ludacris assuming the host role; the show ended in 2018 after two seasons on that network and only 33 episodes, bringing the overall episode total to 186 over two networks.

The show marked the return to television for Schippers, van der Linden, and Jaspars, who had been on the team that was responsible for the controversial 1967 show Hoepla, canceled after three episodes. Like its "sister show" Barend is weer bezig (1972-1973) and Van Oekel's Discohoek, it was an absurdist show with much nudity, linguistic humor, satirical skits, and illogical plot lines.

The twenty-sixth episode, "Going Too Far", never aired in Excel Saga's original run on TV Tokyo because it was purposefully too violent and obscene for broadcast in Japan.

The series follows Zhao Yunlan (Bai) and Shen Wei (Zhu), a detective and a professor who investigate supernatural phenomena. Though the novel depicts their relationship as romantic in nature, the web series depicts the relationship as a platonic friendship with homoerotic subtext in response to Chinese laws prohibiting depictions of same-sex relationships on television.
