It was originally invented and commercialized in Mexico since 1939, by Fábrica de Chocolates La Azteca. The name is an affectionate Spanish word for "grandma". Since 1973, Mexican actress Sara García has been the image for the brand before it was acquired by the Swiss company in the 1990s.

Hershey's Kisses is a brand of chocolate first produced by the Hershey Company in 1907. The bite-sized pieces of chocolate have a distinctive conical shape, sometimes described as flat-bottomed teardrops. Hershey's Kisses chocolates are wrapped in squares of lightweight aluminum foil. A narrow strip of paper sticks out from the top of each Hershey's Kiss wrapper. Originally designed as a flag for the "Hershey's" brand, the printed paper plumes were added to the Kisses product wrapper in 1921 in order to distinguish the Hershey's Kiss from its competitors who offered similar products.

In 2004 Läderach decided to enter the consumer market by acquiring Merker Confiserie AG, a well-established chocolate retailer. The company Stock Cognac Medicinal was founded 20 October 1921 in Požega, producing strong alcoholic drinks. In 1936 the company also started producing chocolate and candy products. The chocolate factory was rented to Nestlé from 1936 to 1946. In 1951 the company changed its name to Zvečevo d.d. Požega. In the 1960s, all efforts were aimed towards production of cocoa products, strong alcoholic drinks and milk powder, as the unprofitable and outdated production of fruit juices and flour was abandoned. A cooperation with Nestlé was established in 1970 that lasted until 1995.
