Mannequin refers to an often articulated doll used by artists, tailors, dressmakers, window-dressers and others especially to display or fit clothing and show off different fabrics and textiles. Previously, the English term referred to human models and muses ; the meaning as a dummy dating from the start of World War II.

A crash test dummy, or simply dummy, is a full-scale anthropomorphic test device (ATD) that simulates the dimensions, weight proportions and articulation of the human body during a traffic collision. Dummies are used by researchers, automobile and aircraft manufacturers to predict the injuries a person might sustain in a crash. Modern dummies are usually instrumented to record data such as velocity of impact, crushing force, bending, folding, or torque of the body, and deceleration rates during a collision.

Resusci Anne was developed by the Norwegian toy maker Åsmund S. Lærdal and the Austrian-Czech physician Peter Safar and American physician James Elam, and is produced by the company Laerdal Medical.

The Ex, also known as the Ex-Girlfriend, and now renamed to Alexa Zombie, is a mannequin produced by Zombie Industries to be a target for gun enthusiasts. The mannequin's name, and the fact that it spouted blood when shot, caused controversy. The target received attention after the National Rifle Association requested that Zombie Industries remove another target that resembled Barack Obama from a vendor booth at the organization's 2013 convention. It was criticized by domestic violence organizations, but the manufacturer claimed that it was not intended to promote violence against women.

TAM was created by designer Richard Rush in 1968.
